In October 2024, WERC conducted a research study to gather data and insights from 21 CEOs of relocation management companies (RMCs), all members of the association and collectively representing more than 95% of total RMC activity. The study, which focused on domestic and international relocation volumes and growth trajectory over a three-year period (2022, 2023, and projected 2024), among other areas of interest, revealed significant trends within the industry.
The research study provided insight into the number of individuals supported by RMCs with employment-related mobility, with surveyed RMCs indicating an anticipated domestic and international relocation volume in 2024 of nearly 450,000. Of this, U.S. domestic relocations formed the vast majority of volume (approximately 304,000) with the remainder comprised of international (non-U.S.) relocations.
Notably, the data shows a significant contraction in 2023, indicated by the 20% decline in overall relocation volumes from 2022 to 2023. However, the industry was cautiously optimistic about seeing improvements in 2024, with the projected volumes of nearly 450,000 programs, reflecting a 5% expected increase over 2023, although still 15% lower than 2022 levels.
The study’s breadth is noteworthy, as it reflects the broadest compilation of insights and data from key service providers supporting the vast majority of corporate mobility programs. Detailed breakdowns by industry volume were gathered to provide valuable peer benchmarking for RMC members. This offers meaningful data to understand trends, industry dynamics, and market landscape. More volume-related details from the data-intensive report are available to download.
The greatest challenges cited by RMCs in 2024 were lower volume levels and various pricing pressures, including rising supply chain costs and increasing client cost sensitivities. Concerns were also indicated regarding the changing landscape around U.S. buyer broker compensation and its potential impact on the talent mobility industry.
As RMCs and the broader talent mobility ecosystem navigate 2025, the trends impacting our industry will remain top of mind for WERC.
